In this post Taban Studio team discuss thin hair and share tips and tricks on ways to give it more body and volume. So don’t worry, our team have lots of suggestions and ideas to help you. The various causes of thinning hair There are many reasons why your hair may be thinning, including over-processing your hair, stress, using the wrong products for your hair type and, of course, medical conditions like alopecia. Indeed, various medications can also affect hormone levels and affect hair growth. Some thyroid medications, anti-anxiety pills and birth control tablets are thought to have an effect on hair thinning. Age is also a factor of course. As we get older our hair looks thinner for two reasons – we produce, less hairs and the hair strands themselves get thinner. But there’s good news too…there’s lots you can do to create thicker hair. Use highlights to create texture to your hair Carefully placed highlights create texture and to your hair, which gives a fuller look compared with a single toned style. We can advise you on the highlights that will work well to achieve the result you want. Colour the root to create the remedy Another way to create the illusion of hair thickness is to colour your roots a slightly darker colour than the rest of your hair. This needs to be done professionally though as the technique to get it right is a specialist one. The colour won’t thicken your hair but creates an optical illusion as the eye is drawn to other areas of your hair. Can we help?

We can help advise you on the right cut, colour to give your hair the right boost. Autumn may very well be the most colourful season of all. Look outside and you’re treated to the vibrant reds and oranges so characteristic of this time of year. But where your hair colour is concerned, we’re here to suggest trying out something out of the ordinary. Mulled wineIn autumn, red is probably the right way to go. But you should definitely take it a few notches warmer. Instead, take a leaf out of Zendaya’s book, and try to make a difference with a mulled wine shade. This dusky crimson colour has hints of chardonnay red wine and adds auburn accents for dimension. Smoky GreenIf your blonde hair ever turned green from exposure to chemicals in the pool over summer. Good news, though. Green undertones is now a hot new autumn hair trend especially on grey hair, are totally in. Blended BalayageIf you’re stuck between blonde and brunette, a soft fade from dark roots to golden tresses is exactly what the stylist ordered. Why not just have the two?! Brighten your look as the nights begin to draw in by framing your face with blonde pieces like Margot Robbie. Golden BrunetteBrown can be plain colour. But not for long! That’s because adding a touch of gold brings dimension and shine. Make sure you give it a try this autumn! Gingerbread CaramelHUUUMMMM! Gingerbread caramel is the golden shade of your autumn dreams. A bit brunette, a touch blonde, and just a smidge on the red side, too. Warming up the complexion and giving your tresses a gorgeous glossy sheen. Keep the red tones subtle and predominantly placed around the face for a skin-brightening effect. Et voila: the ideal autumnal hairstyle. Emma Stone approves. BlackYou don’t need to add some drastic colour to make a statement this autumn. Long black hair like Camila Mendes’ stands out while looking natural. Want to make sure your black shade stays dark throughout the fall season? Use a conditioner that will lock in colour to prevent premature fading.
Balayage comes from the French word meaning ‘to sweep’ and is a highlighting technique used to create a blended, multi-dimensional and natural-looking colour. The dye is painted freehand on to the hair, providing a modernised alternative to traditional foils. One of the many reasons that makes the balayage so popular is that it’s completely customisable to you. As little or as much colour can be added to your tresses as you desire – creating a bespoke colour finish. Balayages are suitable for everyone! There is belief that a balayage is only suitable for blondes, however this is far from the truth. A balayage looks great on brunettes and redheads too! At your consultation prior to your appointment, your stylist will help decide the perfect approach to a balayage for your hair. The days are getting longer and there’s a trace of sunshine in the sky; the breeze is less biting. Yes, spring is here! Why not shake off the winter blues by getting your tresses in order?! Switch Your Shampoo
Spring clean your hair by finding the right shampoo for your hair type (the same goes for your conditioner!). For a gentler cleanse, consider switching to a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner – especially if your hair is feeling dry. Because they’re free from sulfates (the chemical cleansing agents in shampoo that cause suds), sulfate-free shampoos don’t strip the hair of its nourishing natural oils. Give Your Scalp Some TLC Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Dirt, oil and styling products build up on the scalp, which can lead to irritation and dandruff. At the very least, buildup leaves hair looking dull; over time though, scalp buildup clogs hair follicles, causing hair thinning or even hair loss. Well, to keep your scalp healthy, you should periodically exfoliate it as well. Use a scalp scrub or brush to slough away any buildup, and wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo once monthly. Hydrate Your Hair If your hair is feeling really dry and brittle, nourish it with a daily dose of moisture. Apply a lightweight oil or cream from the mid-lengths to the tips in-between washes. And whenever you do wash your hair, try not to use heated styling tools; if you can get away with letting your hair air dry, then do it. If you do need to use the hairdryer, turn the temperature down. Refresh Your Colour One of the best ways to lift your look is by freshening up your hair colour, whatever your shade. The spring and summer months are a great time to experiment with lighter hair colours or highlights, especially if you want to complement a sun-kissed complexion. Speak to your stylist about the hair colour trends we’re seeing this year if you’re struggling to settle on the right hue for you, or check out more of our blogs! Get a Trim Whether you fancy a whole new hairstyle or just need your ends tidying up, head to the salon for a seasonal trim. When you get a split end, it heads further and further up the hair shaft; the only way to fix broken ends is to snip them off. If you don’t want to lose much length, ask your stylist to ‘dust’ the hair instead. Spring Highlights! Now it’s time to lighten up your locks in time for Summer with our highlights offer! Half-head highlights, cut & blow dry for £85 or a full-head highlights, cut & blow dry for £100. Find out more here! T&C’s apply. The French Crop “The French crop suits most face shapes and is ideal for men going thinner on top. Since you’re taking the hair forward slightly here, leaving length in the fringe, it can help to cover any receding patches. “It’s a low maintenance, perfect for someone in and out of the gym or swimming pool, as you can wear it without styling product. “If, however, you do want to use product, try a little hairspray". slick back“The modern slick back first made an impact in the 1920s. At the time, it was useful to have a hairstyle that wouldn’t be messed up when wearing a hat (a status symbol and indicator of one’s class around the early 20th century). Since then, it has become a timeless classic. “Straight hair is best for this – the more curl you have, the harder it is to slick back properly. As for what face shape suits this style, it’s pretty versatile, as it will allow facial features (like beards, moustaches) to be more prominent, with the hair essentially framing the face. Unfortunately, for those with a receding hairline, the slick back look won’t be ideal as it’ll make recession far more prominent. “The back and sides need to be tapered, natural and fairly tight, with a graduation up to the slightly heavier top. If you’re going for an undercut, there needs to be a disconnection here, but blending would be a better option for finer hair. “To style, blow-dry the hair back (if you have hair that grows forward, this will take longer) – bear in mind it takes practice to do this effectively. For a traditional slick look, use a water-based pomade and comb through when damp, or try a matte pastefor a softer, more contemporary finish.” the buzz cut“The buzz cut is a timeless style. But to really make it work, you need to have a great shaped head [a noggin like Ryan Gosling’s or Christian Bale’s, for example]. “Go for a shape that is slightly square over all [clippered at the sides], with a little more length on the top. Scissor over comb, you can work with the shape of the head to make the overall cut more flattering. “To style, try a little moulding cream to give your cropped style some finish.” the pompadour“The pompadour has been popular in many different lengths and variations since its original debut, on Madame du Pompadour, chief mistress to the French King Louis XV in the 1750s. Initially a feminine style in which all the hair was pinned up onto the top of the head to create height and drama – the style has morphed over hundreds of years into the wearable styles pictured below. A hairstyle with hundreds of years of history? You can’t get more classic than that. “The pompadour works for most but does require some degree of thickness to the hair so that the style can support itself once created. For example, if you have a narrow face shape, you could wear your pompadour wider and softer, or if you have a round face, it’s worth slicking the hair at the sides of your head right down to slim the overall silhouette. Once nearly dry, use your fingertips, or a round/Denman hairbrush to give the ends some movement, allowing the style to be pushed back on itself. Add your product to the back and sides before working through the top – remember you can always add a little more in. “Finally, groom into place [using hairspray for hold] for your chosen finish – whether an Elvis-inspired greaser style or a more James Dean-esque dishevelled take.” the side parting“Particularly popular from the 1920s-1940s and again in the 1960s, this style has been revived in the last decade as an easier-to-achieve alternative to the slick back. “As the basis of the haircut is a simple short back and sides, the style is pretty versatile and will suit most hair types and face shapes. “The styling product you should use depends on your hair density: those with thicker hair should try a paste, while a matte clay works best for finer, less dense hair types. “Actually parting the hair can be tricky; the best approach is to put the product in the hair when damp (not wet) and part using a comb. You should try to establish where the natural parting is, perhaps with the help of your barber initially. “If you’re struggling, comb the hair backwards and you’ll see where it starts to fall and separate. Rub the styling product into your hands, distribute evenly throughout the hair and then apply a setting spray if you’ve got really unruly hair.” texture and undone“First things first, you’re going to need a good bit of length in your hair before you schedule a cut for a style like this. Also worth noting is that this textured style works best with thicker rather than fine hair, and if you’re receding, then this isn’t the style for you. “Guys with double crowns or cows licks should definitely consider the textured look as it’s a style that generally lets your hair lie the way it wants to. It’s best not to battle against these hair quirks. “When styling a textured look, you need to make sure the hair is pretty dry. Once dry, manipulate a little texture enhancer, clay or putty into the hair with your fingers. With spring around the corner, we’ve seen a lot of interest in shorter hairstyles. Clients who are considering going ‘shorter’ often ask us whether they will achieve a look which is faster and easier to style in the mornings. So here are our team’s hair care tips to ensure your new short hair style remains looking fabulous, and with minimal fuss. 1 - You want a style which is easy to work with. The more you have to manipulate it each morning, the more effort and time it will take.
2. Be gentle with your brush Short hair doesn’t need as much brushing as long hair, so be gentle on it. If you do over brush, you’ll be adding extra stress to the hair follicles and you may find that your hair becomes greasier or brittle sooner. As an alternative, try using your fingers instead of a brush. 3. Turn down the heat Short hair can be easily damaged by heated styling appliances like hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs. As well as potentially damaging the hair shaft, they can affect how your hairstyle then holds onto any colour. If you want use styling appliances, use heat protection sprays and give your hair a regular conditioning treatment on a regular basis. We recommend the Matrix or Milk Shake range. 4. Book in for regular trims To make sure your hair remains healthy and gorgeous in your new style, keep it regularly trimmed. Bear in mind that hair tends to grow about 1cm per month. With short hair styles, choose a stylist who is a master in precision cutting. You really can’t afford for them to make any mistakes! Skill and experience are paramount here. Can we help?
